Rev up yer fog machines - we’re taking a dip into the filmography of Russel Mulcahy, the Melbourne-born director probably best known for these two trippy genre films. Either that, or his slew of iconic 80s music videos (Total Eclipse of the Heart? Video Killed The Radio Star? Cmon now)
RAZORBACK is a superbly stylised creature feature (think JAWS but outback), filmed in our own sweet dad’s turf of Broken Hill: a dreamy nightmare of big pigs and bigger accents. HIGHLANDER is a cult action fantasy epic, with sweet immortal world building and a fabulous villain - Christopher Lambert is uhhh less effective as the hero. Mulcahy’s distinctive, Gothic filmmaking flair makes them both well worth a watch. Seen in quick succession, the vibe is like if a bloodthirsty avenging knight from ye olde times burst through the doors of your local Hogs Breath Cafe. Are there still any Hogs Breath Cafe locations anywhere in Australia? Pls get back to us about this if you live near an operational Hogs Breath cafe.
